The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports, eight out of ten fire deaths occur in the home. Although the number of fire fatalities has dropped significantly over the past decade, the percentage of fires that occur in the home has remained steady.  The Orange Township Fire Department is working with NFPA as a part of the "Team Up for Fire Safety" educational campaign.

Fire can happen to anyone.

How often should I change my smoke detector battery?
Fire departments try to make it a big emphasis to change the batteries when you change your clock. It’s cheap insurance, changing your batteries twice a year. Install a smoke and fire alarm on each floor.

What is the cause of fires in the home?
Nearly one-third of home fire victims lost their lives in fires which were smoking-related. If there is a smoker in the home, install a smoke and fire alarm in his or her room and have large heavy ashtrays placed in various locations.

I have been reading about clothes dryer fires, is this a real problem?
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 14,000 clothes dryer-related fires occur each year. Since dust and lint buildup is the major problem, CPSC recommends the lint filter be cleaned after each load and make sure the dryer is operating properly. Check for dust and lint buildup in the exhaust duct and around other major appliances, such as washers, water heaters and furnaces. Take all clothes out of the dryer after the cycle is done.

Should I unplug my appliances?
All appliances should be unplugged when not in use. If an appliance begins to smoke or smell, unplug it immediately. Heat producing devices, such as irons and automatic brew coffee pots, should never be trusted to turn themselves on or off, particularly if they depend on a clock timer.

What about my power tools?
Unplug power tools when not in use.

How often should I have my furnace checked?
Have the furnace professionally inspected once each year. Keep any flammable materials away from the furnace or water heater. If you have a wood stove or fireplace, have the chimney cleaned regularly. Leave lots of space around fans and space heaters.

How many fire extinguishers should I have?
It is recommended that there be a fire extinguisher near each exit.

Some other fire prevention advice:

• Don't leave stoves or burners unattended while cooking.
• Don't wear loose fitting clothing while cooking since they catch fire more easily.
• Don't plug too many items in the same electrical outlet or circuit, and check wiring and outlets for signs of damage.
• Always remember to keep matches and lighters away from children.
• Don't place extension cords under rugs.
• Do not keep combustible materials like newspapers after you have finished with them.
• Flammable liquids should be stored in a cool, ventilated place away from any source of heat.
• Hold a fire drill, showing everyone how to stay low and exit from the dwelling.
