FIRE SAFETY
The Orange Township Fire Department, Fire Prevention Bureau, offers
some of the following tips:
Electric safety
Extension cords are for temporary use only. Extension cords used
outside should state: "For outdoor use." Use one cord
instead of multiple short cords. Also, using an extension ladder
should be done with care. Never use an aluminum ladder, or fly a
kite around power wires. Remember while cleaning your pool to pay
attention to overhead power lines. Make sure your pool is connected
to a GFCI electric breaker to prevent electric shocks.
Before you dig
If you are considering replacing, or adding to your landscape, remember
most utility lines are buried! These include gas, electric and telephone.
You can call 1-800-362-2764 to have underground utilities located
on your property before you dig.
Lawn mower care and use
Prior to mowing your grass, be aware of the following concerns:
Always add fuel to your mower outside the garage. On hot days, fumes
can become trapped in the garage, making fire a very real possibility.
Wipe up any spills prior to starting your mower. Also, check to
make sure there are no obstructions under the mower deck that may
be thrown during start-up. Make sure that all guards are in place
and operating properly. Always keep children and pets in the house
while mowing. Flying objects thrown by your mower can severely injure
your child or pet. Never allow young children to mow the lawn, or
be a passenger on the mower.
Summer cooking
Keep a close eye on your cooking. If you must leave the stove or
grill for a short time, take a pot holder or another item along
to remind you that something is being prepared. Maintain a 3-foot
zone around the stove, or grill, to keep children and pets away.
Stay alert! Dont cook if youre tired, or may fall asleep
while cooking. Keep pot holders, food packaging, dishtowels and
any other items that may burn off your stove and away from your
grill. Always remember to roll up your sleeves and keep lose fitting
clothes away from burners, hot ovens and grills.
In case of fire
If you have a small grease fire, attempt to cover it with a lid,
use baking soda or a fire extinguisher located in your kitchen.
Never use water. Always remember if you have a fire, Get Out, Stay
Out and call 911 from the neighbors.
Fire drills
All residents should have in place and practice an Emergency
Preparedness Drill with the entire family. This drill will inform
you how to set up an escape route for all rooms of your home, along
with when and how to practice. Emergency escapes routes from the
second floor, by use of emergency ladder, should also be practiced.
Please stop by or contact the fire prevention office for further
free informational pamphlets.
