Many Orange Township residents are aware that when the township took occupancy of the township hall we also acquired two cats. For those of you that have not heard the story, I’ll give you a little bit of background.

When the township purchased the property, the building had been a house, which has since been converted to become what is now the township hall. This is where the township offices are located. The previous owners of the house notified the township that they had two cats but they were too "wild" to catch so they would not be taking the cats with them.

It was immediately discovered just how "wild" these two cats were. Both cats loved attention. A favorite pastime has been having their ears rubbed. Wild? Hardly!!

Township Trustee, David Eby’s wife, Jeanie, quickly took it upon herself to look after the cats. Their son, Alan, named them Mudslide and Oreo. Veterinarian, Dr. Bob Cape donates his time and any medical treatment the cats require. Their food is donated. The township merely provides the cats with a place to stay.

Both animals have become a big part of the office. Oreo can usually be spotted outside. He regularly greets visitors. Mudslide, the older of the two began to develop medical problems last fall. Nothing serious, the normal ailments that come with age (she was about 16 years old). It was at this time she was moved inside the building.

Mudslide quickly acclimated. Many visitors have been pleasantly surprised to come into the office and see a cat sitting on a desk or soundly sleeping in an office chair. Numerous children have come back to my desk to feed "Mud" cat treats. The staff quickly nicknamed her Queen. She ruled the office. Every morning she was awaiting our arrival so we could get her breakfast. Shortly after breakfast she would come to sit in my chair behind me. She always preferred to lay behind me in my chair. That way I didn’t disturb her napping as I worked.

July 2, 2002 Mudslide took her last trip to Dr. Capes office. I don’t think any of us realized what a big part of our day she had become. I still find myself looking for her before locking up in the afternoon. The office isn’t the same without her.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Cape for all the wonderful care he provided Mudslide and continues to provide Oreo.
